The lights go off, the aircon stops, and the fridge goes quiet. In most Singapore homes, that means something in your DB box (distribution board) has tripped. It’s annoying, but it’s also your electrical system doing its job: cutting the power before a fault becomes a shock or a fire.
This guide covers what to do in the first few minutes, the usual causes of power trips in HDB flats, condos and landed homes, and how to tell when it’s time to call an electrician.
First, check if it’s just your home
Look out of the window or into the corridor. If your neighbours, the corridor lights and the lifts are also out, the problem is likely outside your home. In that case there’s nothing to reset in your DB box. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) advises checking whether the outage affects only your home or your surroundings too, and following SP Group and EMA for updates. You can report a wider outage to the SP Group Electricity Service Centre on 1800 778 8888 (source: EMA).
If it’s only your unit, or only part of it, read on.
What to do when your power trips
- Stay safe first. If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or there’s water near a socket, don’t touch anything that looks damaged. Switch off the main switch in your DB box and keep everyone away from the area.
- Switch off and unplug appliances in the area that lost power. Start with the heavy users: water heater, kettle, oven, washing machine and aircon.
- Open your DB box and find the switch that’s down. It’s usually the RCCB (the residual current circuit breaker, often with a small “T” test button, called an ELCB in older homes) or one of the smaller circuit breakers.
- Push it back up once. If it stays up, power should come back to that circuit.
- Plug appliances back in one at a time. Wait a moment after each one. If the power trips again when a particular appliance goes on, you’ve probably found the culprit. Leave it unplugged.
- If it trips again straight away with everything unplugged, stop. Don’t keep resetting it. That points to a fault in the wiring, a socket or the breaker itself, and it needs an electrician.
Never tape or hold a breaker in the “on” position, and don’t open socket faceplates, switches or the DB box cover to look inside. The switches you can see are designed to be reset by hand; everything behind them is a job for a qualified electrician.
Common causes of power trips in Singapore homes
1. A faulty appliance
This is the most common cause. Water heaters are frequent offenders because water and electricity sit close together inside them. Kettles, ovens, washing machines, rice cookers and older aircon units can also develop leaks to earth that trip the RCCB. If the trip only happens when one appliance is switched on, that appliance needs repair or replacing.
2. Water getting into a socket, switch or light
Singapore’s heavy rain and humidity don’t help. Trips that happen during or after a downpour often come from water seeping into an outdoor or balcony point, a bathroom light, or a socket near a leaking pipe or window. If your power trips every time it rains, get it checked soon rather than living with it.
3. An overloaded circuit
Running several high-power appliances on the same circuit at once, or plugging too many into one point with adapters and power strips, can trip a circuit breaker. If the trip happens when the oven, kettle and microwave are on together, spread the load out and consider adding a dedicated point for heavy appliances.
4. Worn wiring, sockets or breakers
Wiring, sockets and breakers age. Loose connections, damaged insulation or a breaker that has become oversensitive can all cause trips with no obvious trigger. Scorch marks on a socket, a faceplate that feels warm, or a crackling sound are warning signs. This is common in older flats that haven’t been rewired.
When to call an electrician
- The switch won’t stay up, even with everything unplugged
- You smell burning, or see scorch marks, smoke or sparks
- Trips keep coming back, especially in wet weather
- A socket or switch feels hot or looks damaged
- Part of your home has no power but nothing in the DB box has tripped
A good electrician will test each circuit to find which one is faulty, then trace the fault to the appliance, point or cable causing it. Repeated trips are worth fixing properly, because the underlying fault usually gets worse, not better. See our power trip services for how we handle it.
How to prevent power trips
- Avoid daisy-chaining power strips and adapters, especially for heaters, kettles and irons.
- Replace appliances that repeatedly trip the power instead of resetting and hoping.
- Fix leaks near sockets, switches and light fittings quickly.
- Press the “T” test button on your RCCB occasionally. It should trip straight away; if it doesn’t, have it checked.
- Book an electrical inspection when you move into an older or resale home, or before adding heavy appliances during a renovation.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to switch the power back on after a trip?
Yes, once, after unplugging appliances in the affected area and checking there’s no burning smell or visible damage. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and call an electrician.
Why does my power trip when it rains?
Usually because moisture is getting into an outdoor, balcony or bathroom point, a light fitting, or wiring near a leak. The RCCB detects the current leaking to earth and cuts the power. The leak needs to be found and fixed.
Can a faulty appliance trip the whole house?
Yes. A fault that leaks current to earth trips the RCCB, which usually protects the whole home, not just one circuit. That’s why unplugging and testing appliances one by one is the fastest way to find the cause.
My whole block has no power. What do I do?
That’s likely a wider supply issue rather than a fault in your home. Switch off appliances to protect them from a surge when power returns, keep the fridge closed, and check SP Group and EMA for updates. You can call the SP Group Electricity Service Centre on 1800 778 8888.
